Explore the surroundings of Drake Bay during a three-hour guided birdwatching experience through forest edges, gardens, secondary rainforest, open areas and other local habitats.
The Osa Peninsula supports an exceptional variety of resident and migratory birds. This tour focuses on locating, identifying and observing them while learning about their calls, feeding habits, seasonal movements and relationship with the surrounding environment.
Two departure times are available:
Morning tour: 5:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.
Afternoon tour: 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Participants should arrive 10 minutes before the selected departure time for check-in and a short introduction.
The exact meeting point and birdwatching route will be confirmed before the activity. The location may vary according to recent bird activity, weather, trail conditions and operational considerations.
The morning tour begins during one of the most active periods of the day, when temperatures are cooler and many species are feeding, calling and moving between the forest and open areas.
The afternoon tour offers a different atmosphere as the heat decreases and birds begin another period of activity before sunset.
The guide will select the most suitable route according to current conditions and recent observations. The experience may include quiet walks, short stops at productive viewing areas and time to listen carefully for calls coming from the canopy and surrounding vegetation.
Possible observations may include scarlet macaws, toucans, aracaris, parrots, trogons, tanagers, hummingbirds, woodpeckers, manakins, raptors, herons, kingfishers and many other tropical species.
Your certified guide will help identify birds by appearance, behavior, habitat and sound while explaining the natural history of the species encountered.
Bird and wildlife observations are never guaranteed.
Bird activity changes according to weather, season, food availability, migration, breeding cycles and other natural conditions. Every outing is different, and quieter observation generally produces better results.
$50 USD per person
The price includes:
Three hours of guided birdwatching
Certified bilingual guide
Exploration of selected habitats around Drake Bay
Taxes
Transportation to and from the meeting point, entrance fees to private properties when applicable, drinks, personal equipment, travel insurance and gratuities are not included unless confirmed separately.
Participants should bring comfortable closed shoes, lightweight clothing, rain protection, insect repellent, drinking water, sunscreen and waterproof protection for phones or cameras.
Binoculars are strongly recommended. Participants who own a field guide, camera or spotting scope are welcome to bring them.
Natural or neutral-colored clothing is preferable because bright colors and unnecessary noise can make birds more difficult to approach.
The tour follows responsible birdwatching practices designed to reduce disturbance.
Participants should remain with the guide, avoid loud noises and maintain a respectful distance from birds, nests and feeding areas.
Playback and recorded calls may be limited or avoided when they could disturb territorial, nesting or sensitive species.
The route and duration may be adjusted because of heavy rain, storms or unsafe trail conditions. Light rain does not necessarily prevent the activity and can sometimes produce different observation opportunities.
This tour is suitable for beginners, experienced birdwatchers, photographers and travelers interested in discovering the diversity of birds found around Drake Bay.
Advance booking is recommended because guide availability and group spaces are limited.
Choose the 5:30 a.m. or 3:00 p.m. departure and spend three hours discovering the colors, calls and remarkable birdlife of Drake Bay.
