Corcovado 3-Day Boat-In Hike-Out Tour from Puerto Jimenez

Travel by boat from Puerto Jimenez to Sirena Station, spend two nights exploring the heart of Corcovado National Park and complete the adventure with a challenging hike through La Leona to Carate.

This three-day expedition combines the wildlife-rich trails around Sirena with a long coastal hike on the final day. Entering by boat allows participants to begin exploring soon after arrival, while hiking out provides a completely different perspective through rainforest, beaches, rivers and the southern landscapes of the Osa Peninsula.

Day 1: Puerto Jimenez to Sirena Station by Boat

Check-in takes place in Puerto Jimenez at approximately 5:200 a.m.

The shared boat departs at 5:30 a.m. and travels across the Golfo Dulce before continuing along the Pacific coastline toward Sirena Beach.

The journey normally takes between one hour and thirty minutes and two hours, depending on ocean conditions, weather and operational logistics.

Arrival at Sirena Beach is expected between 7:30 and 8:00 a.m.

Sirena does not have a dock, so passengers should be prepared to step into shallow water when leaving the boat.

After entering Corcovado National Park, the group begins the approximately 30-minute walk from the beach to Sirena Station. Arrival at the station is expected at around 8:30 a.m.

After leaving the overnight equipment in the designated area, the first guided hike begins at approximately 9:00 a.m.

The morning exploration continues until around 11:00 a.m., following trails through lowland rainforest, river areas, secondary forest and open habitats.

Lunch is served at approximately 11:30 a.m.

From 12:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., participants have time to rest during the hottest part of the day.

The afternoon guided hike begins at 2:30 p.m. and continues until approximately 5:00 p.m.

Dinner is served at around 6:00 p.m., followed by the first overnight stay at Sirena Station.

Day 2: Full-Day Exploration Around Sirena

The second day begins at approximately 5:00 a.m. with an early guided walk before sunrise.

This first hike continues until around 7:00 a.m., when temperatures are cooler and many birds and mammals begin their morning activity.

Breakfast is served at approximately 7:30 a.m.

The next guided exploration begins at 8:30 a.m. and continues until around 11:00 a.m.

Your certified guide will select the trails according to recent wildlife activity, weather, river levels and forest conditions.

Lunch is served at approximately 11:30 a.m.

The group rests at the station from 12:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The afternoon hike begins at 2:30 p.m. and finishes at approximately 5:00 p.m., providing another opportunity to observe wildlife as temperatures begin to fall.

Dinner is served at around 6:00 p.m., followed by the second night at Sirena Station.

Day 3: Hike from Sirena to La Leona and Carate

The final day begins before sunrise, with an early breakfast and time to prepare the equipment for the long hike toward La Leona.

The Sirena restaurant provides the guide with a box lunch for each participant, which will be carried and eaten later at a suitable location along the route.

The group begins walking from Sirena Station at 5:00 a.m.

The route from Sirena to La Leona covers approximately 18 to 20 kilometers and normally takes between six and eight hours, depending on tides, weather, trail conditions, wildlife observations and the physical pace of the group.

The trail passes through tropical forest, river areas, remote beaches and exposed coastal sections. Participants should expect heat, humidity, sand, roots, mud and several hours of continuous walking while carrying their personal belongings.

A short rest and hydration break is normally taken at approximately 8:00 a.m., depending on the progress of the group and conditions along the route.

The hike continues through the morning, with the box lunch eaten at an appropriate location and time selected by the guide.

Arrival at La Leona Ranger Station is expected between 12:00 and 1:00 p.m.

After completing the park exit process, the group continues walking along the coastline toward Carate. This final section normally takes approximately one hour.

Arrival in Carate is expected between 1:30 and 2:00 p.m.

Shared 4×4 transportation departs Carate at approximately 2:00 p.m. for the journey back to Puerto Jimenez.

Arrival in Puerto Jimenez is normally between 3:45 and 4:30 p.m., although the final schedule may vary according to tides, weather, road conditions, rainfall, river levels and the pace of the group.

Wildlife and Guided Exploration

Possible wildlife observations during the three-day experience include tapirs, four species of monkeys, anteaters, peccaries, coatis, agoutis, crocodiles, scarlet macaws, toucans and many other mammals, reptiles and tropical birds.

Your certified guide will search for tracks, feeding signs, calls and movement in the vegetation while explaining animal behavior and the ecological relationships found throughout Corcovado.

Wildlife observations are never guaranteed.

Corcovado is a natural environment where animals move freely according to weather, food availability and their own behavior. Spending three days inside the park provides more opportunities for observation, but every visit remains different and unpredictable.

Accommodation at Sirena Station

Accommodation is provided in the shared sleeping facilities at Sirena Station using individual bunk beds.

Bedding is provided, but sleeping areas and common spaces are shared. Privacy is limited, and the experience should not be compared with hotel accommodation.

Participants should bring only the equipment necessary for two nights because all personal belongings must be carried during the final hike from Sirena to Carate.

Physical Requirements

This tour is considered challenging and requires good physical condition.

The first two days include several guided walks around Sirena, while the final day requires approximately 18 to 20 kilometers of hiking from Sirena through La Leona to Carate.

Participants must be comfortable walking for several consecutive hours through tropical heat, humidity, sand, forest trails and uneven terrain while carrying their personal belongings.

This experience is not recommended for people with serious mobility limitations, recent injuries or medical conditions that could make a long and remote hike unsafe.

Passion for his work shows!
William guides people through parks and wildlife sightings, first because he loves nature and second, because it's his job. I spent two afternoons with William as a private birdwatching guide in and around the Drake Bay area. If I'm honest, the experience was significantly more genuine than the one I had at Corcovado, as this guide clearly understood animal behaviour, was really passionate about what he was doing, and took great pride in his work. I'm a photographer, so he was patient and knowledgeable about where to look and what to look for. A great experience!

Amazing wild life in Corcovado with William
We enjoyed having William as our guide. Good communication, punctual and clear about setting up the rules on the trail. All the questions we had about the animals and birds we saw were answered. He also proved to be very committed to show us majority of animals the park is famous for.
