Begin the adventure with an early 4×4 journey from Puerto Jimenez to Carate, traveling through rural communities, rivers and remote rainforest landscapes along the southern Osa Peninsula.
Check-in takes place in Puerto Jimenez at approximately 5:20 a.m., followed by departure at 5:30 a.m. The drive to Carate normally takes between one hour and thirty minutes and two hours, depending on road conditions, rainfall and river levels.
After arriving in Carate between 7:00 and 7:30 a.m., the experience continues on foot along the Pacific coastline toward La Leona Ranger Station, the main land entrance to Corcovado National Park. This first section combines beach, forest edges and open coastal scenery before reaching the park entrance.
Once the registration process is complete, the guided hike continues through the trails of La Leona and toward the Madrigal area. Unlike a boat-based visit, this tour allows travelers to enter Corcovado gradually, experiencing the transition from the coast into the tropical forest step by step.
The route offers opportunities to observe scarlet macaws, toucans, monkeys, coatis, agoutis, peccaries, reptiles and many other species. Your certified guide will also help identify animal tracks, feeding signs, bird calls and plants that reveal the hidden activity of the rainforest.
Wildlife observations are never guaranteed. Corcovado is a natural environment where animals move freely according to food availability, weather and other ecological conditions. The guide uses local knowledge and tracking experience to improve the possibilities of observation without disturbing the animals.
The hike is considered moderate to challenging and requires a reasonable level of physical fitness. Participants should be prepared to walk for several hours through sand, roots, mud and uneven terrain in tropical heat and humidity.
At approximately 12:00 p.m., the group begins the return hike toward La Leona and Carate. Arrival in Carate is expected at around 2:00 p.m., followed by the 4×4 journey back to Puerto Jimenez. The tour normally finishes between 3:30 and 4:00 p.m., although the schedule may vary according to weather, tides, road conditions, trail conditions and the pace of the group.
